Longmont's NextLight - How to actually get 1G from your fiber

Submitted by dnieweg on Sat, 06/02/2018 - 11:49

As Longmont, Colorado rolls out the 1 Gb fiber network called NextLight to the city's residents, a common question is, "Am I really getting 1000 Mbps Up and Down? I run speedtest.net, but am seeing a much slower speed."

First, let me reassure you: Yes, the City is giving you 1 Gbps. The problem is you are not setup to use it, nor test it.

I am going to quickly tell you why you are seeing the low speeds as well as potential solutions, how to fix your network, and then how to get a better picture of your actual speeds.

Why is !!1014JFcfLM a bad password?

It seems like it meets all the needed characteristics of a good password. Length is 12 characters. It has lowercase, uppercase, alphas and numerics, as well as special characters. The answer as to why this is a bad password will reveal that everything we thought about how to make a secure password, might just be wrong.

We often hear the term that hackers are using a technique called a dictionary attack to try and guess your password so they can hack your email/bank/etc account.

New CMS Site - First Steps

Submitted by dnieweg on Mon, 01/18/2016 - 21:44

There are a few task I complete first for every new site including both WordPress and Drupal. This is not an all inclusive list, but covers the main items.

1) Analytics & Search Submission

The very first step I always take with any new site is to create a Google Analytics and Google Search (formerly Webmaster Tools) accounts. As soon as the site is functional, the first module I will install is something that will inject the GA code in to each page.

Yes, I have replaced the site again.

This is the result of setting up a new Debian 8 (Jessie) Linux server with MySQL 5.5 and the really brand new PHP 7.0.1.

This particular site is running the brandy new Drupal 8.0.1 which I have been wanting to play with.

Just got it installed, so check back in a few days.
